在小编看来，收藏或者收集东西一直都是一个比较奢侈的爱好。它既需要一定的经济条件，也需要付出大量的时间，还需要掌握不少相关的知识。而这些对于仍处于学生阶段的我们来说都不太可能。不过好在雅思官方并没有要求大家一定要给出肯定的回答。因此，如果大家确实没有收藏东西的习惯的话，照实说就好。

Do you collect things? 你收集东西吗？

No, I do not. I know some people derive a lot of pleasure and even wealth from collecting things. Inspired by them, I used to collect stamps for a period. But I simply could not find its amusement, so I quit it after about a month. Right now, I want to focus on my study and IELTS, leaving everything behind.

Yes, but only one. It is a silver pendant necklace in the shape of a traditional Chinese lock. On it are engraved sophisticated patterns and the words “Long live the kid”. It is a gift from my grandpa on my first birthday.

The answer varies according to the specific items. If it is something that carries a piece of sweet memory, like the necklace I mentioned before, I will keep it forever and make sure I have packed it perfectly every time I move. This article is from Laokaoya website. However, if it is an everyday item, like a chair or a toothbrush, I will throw it away as long as it is broken or out of date.

I have a specific drawer in my desk to preserve all the important things, like my diploma, transcript, awards I have won in various competitions, and the ID card. They are kept in different folders so that I can always find what I need.

When I was a teenager, I used to go with my family and grandparents to our countryside house. As the house is right next to the forest, I used to walk around and explore the area, and interestingly enough I collected these huge tree mushrooms. General Rules:

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. Again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer.

Talk about yourself. This part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person).

So, lets take a look at some questions:

Answer 1:

A "No" answer.I wouldn't say I do. I don't have any particular collection of toys, I don't like to collect clothes or shoes, and I definitely don't have any post stamps in an album. I guess I didn't find a unique thing I love, so I never got into collecting.

The unfortunate thing is that my mom had no idea of a resell value of things, and never valued my toys as I did, so she gave them away or straight up threw them away. The older I get the angrier I get at this, but sadly I can't turn back time.

Would you keep old things for a long time? Why?

Answer 1:

Not really. I prefer to replace my items, gadgets, clothes, and everything else after a while. To be honest, these days items are not made durable, and so once you wear a piece of cloth 10 or 15 times, it wears off. The same goes with technology, where a lot of machines are designed to break in a year or two. And so, I would try to replace them when I can and when I can afford it, of course.

My Personal Answer:

My father is like this. He would keep any small gadget or cable at home, in case he needs it someday. Obviously, he won't. As for me, I am different. I won't waste resources and I would take very good care of my possessions, but I'd replace them when their time comes. I'm a strong believer in new technology, for instance. I would like to have a new smartphone every few years, I'd replace my laptop the same and in general, I'd replace some of the machines at home once they get slightly old or overused.

Where do you usually keep things that you need?

Answer 1:

Are we talking about old things or new things? Most of the things I need in my daily life are on my desk or near drawers. I like to have everything in front of my eyes, so to say, to be able to grab it quickly and do my job as soon as possible. As for some older things, I'll keep them in the wardrobe.

My Personal Answer:

Well, that depends on what are those things. For instance, all the kitchen utensils are in the cupboards and drawers in the kitchen. Repair tools and other random items I might rarely need are in the closet, together with old clothes, bags, and anything else that is essentially old and rarely used. Clothes that I wear and use are in the same wardrobe, for convenience and being nearby... And so on. Everything has its place and order.

What kinds of things are not worth keeping?

Answer 1:

Well, I think I mentioned this before, but I wouldn't keep old clothes for too long. Many clothes stretch out, get an unwashable smell or change their shape after multiple washings, and so they are simply for throwing out. I wouldn't keep some broken machines as well. Like if my toaster breaks down, the best thing to do is to drop it in the recyclable trash bin.

My Personal Answer:

I rarely keep anything that gets old. My father used to keep so many old things for "someday" that it looked a little bit like hoarding. I decided that I will be absolutely the opposite. I don't think it's worth keeping broken machines, old and unusable clothes, kitchen machines or utensils that would not be used ever again, and so on. I see value in collectible toys though. Those should be kept.

What kinds of collections do people keep?

Answer 1:

This is interesting as everyone is different. I've seen people collecting so many things, including insects, coins, stones, seashells, alcohol bottles, and even cars. It depends on the person's passion and the size of his wallet. Some common things for a collection these days are shoes like Nike or Addidas sneakers, as young people are crazy about those, as well as toys. There are these "blind boxes" with collectible toys that have become popular and... exploit child gambling, but that's another topic of discussion...

My Personal Answer:

My uncle had and still has a large collection of mini alcohol bottles. I believe he had over 1000 different last time I checked. He doesn't drink them but puts them on four large shelves, and it looks like a wall of mini bottles. It is a fascinating collection. That said, people can collect all sorts of things, depending on their love for those things. Nowadays a very popular thing is digital collections. There are many virtual games and even virtual worlds that provide a huge collection of pets or animals you can ride on or even furniture and ornaments for their virtual home. So people spend thousands of hours trying to collect all these virtual items, just so they can feel the satisfaction of owning them all.

I remember there was a time that I collected useless things, like airplane tickets and shopping receipts for I thought it was the testimonial of my trips. I kept them for years until they faded out. One day I realized they were not worth my time and energy to collect them since I would have a lot more ahead…From then on, basically I don’t collect anything anymore except the photos I shot during the trip.

I suppose many of the things we collect change with our age. I still remember collecting sea shells from the beach, sticks from the park, and some random small stones from the street. I always thought they'd have some value. Obviously, that didn't pan out...

1. Do you collect things?

Not really. I don’t like to keep many things in the house. In fact, I like my place to be neat and simple. I only keep things that are necessary to me, and will get rid of them once I find them redundant. Yeah, well, perhaps that’s not very eco-friendly. But I really am not into making collections.

2. Are there any things you keep from childhood?

Yeah, there are a few toys that I still keep. But they are in my parents’ house. One of them is a mouth organ which you blow with your mouth. 。。。。余下范文省略！

1.Do you collect things?

I used to collect sneakers, I was a sneaker head, had a whole bunch of Jordan shoes. Somehow over the years, I kinda have lost my interest in sneakers probably because I realized it was all just a waste of money, then I sold all the sneakers I owned. Now, I don’t collect anything. I practice minimalism in life and I really embrace this philosophy, I try to live with less and avoid collecting. I just believe collecting creates wants, and wants lead to overspending. I’ve learned my lesson.

2.Are there any things you keep from childhood?

If we are talking about material things, then there’s none, it’s been so many years, I have lost all of them. I do have some photos from my childhood on my phone, so at least I know what I looked like when I was little. But they don’t really remind me of anything specific, like when that photo was taken, what occasion it was for, what I was doing at the time. The memory is just very vague. I’m just not like most people, I don’t feel it’s that important for me to remember my childhood. I tend to focus more on living in the now.

3.Would you keep old things for a long time? Why?

No, I don’t. I dump things when I’m done with them. Because if you keep a lot of old things, they clutter up your house, you may be like “oh, I hate to throw them away, I may use them in the future.” No, you won’t. All these old things end up collecting dust. And when you move home, it’s a big hassle to pack up these old things and carry them around. You will question yourself, like why do I have to keep them in the first place? Take this from someone who has moved 3 times in the last 2 years, between different cities.

As much as I said I try to live with less, it’s not like I can live with nothing. I do have a few things, and since I like a minimalistic look of my home, I try to hide everything, so the house looks clean and the space is bigger. I have these white plastic boxes I bought from Ikea, I divide my things into categories and put them in these boxes and hide the boxes in the closets or cupboards. It is very satisfying for me to do this. Basically, it’s out of sight, out of mind.

Yes, I do. I wear a Junghans mechanical watch which I really love, Junghans a German watch maker, they make quality, functional watches with expert craftsmanship. What I love about my Junghans watch is its Bauhaus design, crisp clean, with no frills. I’m always drawn to such designs. Now I’m not really that into watches and I don’t know much about them, but when I was looking for a timepiece that I’d feel comfortable wearing to my workplace or other formal occasions, my Junghans watch really caught my eye, I just knew it would look good on my wrist.

2.Have you ever got a watch as a gift?

My Junghans watch is actually a birthday gift from my wife a couple years ago, we were dating at the time, she wanted to get me something really nice. I must have mentioned to her my interest in that watch at one point. So she went and bought it for me, I was thrilled to receive the gift. Last year, she got me another watch, an Apple watch, she was like, you need to have this watch to track your workouts, like counting how many calories you burn and your heart rate and stuff. She had a point but I’m not really a fan of Apple watches, I don’t really wear it.

3.Why do some people wear expensive watches?

Rich people wear expensive watches because they can afford them. Simple as that. Here in China, we have this catchphrase that goes “poor people flaunt their rides, rich people collect watches.” So collecting and wearing outrageously expensive watches is a way to show off wealth and social status for the filthy rich. To think that a small item like a watch sometimes costs a whopping one million dollars, it’s really hard to wrap your head around it. Then again, luxury watches in a way are like artwork, the value goes up over time, so maybe rich people are right about spending exorbitant amounts of money on them.

4.Do you think it is important for you to wear a watch? Why ?

When I was younger, I didn’t feel like I needed to wear a watch, I didn’t want anything on my wrist. As I got older, the idea of wearing a watch kinda grew on me. Mostly it’s nice to use a watch to accessorize for guys, since I don’t wear any jewelry. A nice watch makes you look classy when wearing a suit and tie or any other outfit, it shows you care about style. It is a fashion statement, it looks sophisticated, I mean I really think wearing a watch is part of being a grown man.
